A 25-year-old first-year postgraduate student of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi is fighting for her life on a ventilator after consuming tea from the hospital’s canteen, in what authorities suspect is a case of chemical poisoning. The shocking incident, which unfolded late Thursday night, has raised serious concerns about food safety at Jharkhand’s premier medical institute.
The student, on night duty near the orthopaedic ward, ordered tea from the canteen along with colleagues. She poured the tea into a flask to drink later. After taking a few sips, she complained of a foul smell and taste, warning others not to drink it. “The tea didn’t seem right,” a colleague recalled her saying. Shortly afterward, she fell ill, fainted, and was rushed to the emergency department. She was subsequently placed on a ventilator in the intensive care unit.
“The next 48 hours are critical,” said RIMS spokesperson Dr. Rajiv Ranjan. “This isn’t typical food poisoning; we suspect chemical poisoning.” The flask and related items have been sent for toxicology testing to determine the exact cause. The canteen has been sealed, and a police complaint has been filed. One canteen worker who served the tea is currently detained for questioning.

Dr. Ranjan noted that the student’s condition remains stable but critical. The incident has sparked outrage among students and staff, who are demanding a thorough investigation into the canteen’s operations and stricter safety protocols. Police are probing whether the contamination was accidental or deliberate, as RIMS vows to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents.
