Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju urged political leaders to prioritize debates over disruptions, stating that parliamentary chaos primarily hurts Members of Parliament, especially opposition MPs, rather than the government. Speaking at a Karnataka High Court advocates’ event on “Parliamentary System in the Largest Democracy in the World,” Rijiju criticized party leaders who orchestrate “ruckus and political theatrics” to push narratives, urging younger MPs to resist such directives.
Rijiju emphasized that the government, backed by a majority, can pass bills despite disruptions, but MPs lose valuable opportunities to represent their constituents. “The loss is for the members, particularly opposition MPs, who miss chances to raise issues,” he said, reflecting on the recently concluded monsoon session (July 22-August 12, 2025). He noted that he repeatedly urged opposition parties to engage in scheduled discussions, but disruptions persisted due to leaders’ intentions. “The list of business is fixed daily, yet the House gets derailed,” he added.
The minister’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions, with the opposition, led by Congress, disrupting proceedings over issues like the Finance Bill and U.S. tariffs. Data from PRS Legislative Research shows the 17th Lok Sabha’s productivity dropped to 83% in 2025 from 97% in 2024, with 34 hours lost to disruptions. Rijiju called for public pressure to ensure constructive debates, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for a “golden era” of parliamentary democracy by 2047. Posts on X, like one from @IndiaProgress, echoed Rijiju’s stance, criticizing opposition theatrics for undermining public trust.
