As a severe heatwave situation begins to intensify in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed all schools to submit a compliance report by May 2. The directive comes in response to rising temperatures and is aimed at ensuring that institutions are fully prepared to safeguard students’ health and safety in line with India Meteorological Department (IMD) guidelines.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister stated that all schools in Delhi must submit their compliance reports to the Directorate of Education by May 2. The reports are required under the IMD Heat Wave Action guidelines. She emphasized that the government’s primary focus is the well-being of students, especially as weather conditions become increasingly harsh across the city.
Gupta further instructed schools to implement essential preventive measures on campus. These include ensuring uninterrupted access to safe drinking water, appointing designated nodal officers for heat-related emergencies, and strengthening on-ground monitoring. She also urged parents to dress children in light cotton clothing and stay connected with school WhatsApp groups for timely updates.

The Chief Minister added that parents who face concerns related to school arrangements can directly approach the district magistrate. This measure, she said, is intended to create a responsive system for addressing complaints quickly. The advisory builds on earlier directions issued by the Directorate of Education following a yellow alert from the IMD for heatwave conditions in Delhi.
Under the broader guidelines, schools have already been asked to modify daily routines to reduce heat exposure for students. Outdoor assemblies are being shortened or moved indoors, while physical activities outside classrooms have been suspended.
Schools have also been directed to implement a “water bell” system, ensuring students are reminded to hydrate every 45 to 60 minutes, along with awareness sessions on heat stress and emergency response. With the new compliance deadline, authorities are now focusing on strict implementation and accountability across all government, aided, and private schools.
