Indian Railways has launched a nationwide fire safety audit programme across railway stations in response to recent fire-related incidents, with the objective of strengthening passenger safety and enhancing protection of railway assets. The initiative has been introduced as part of a broader effort to reassess emergency preparedness and ensure compliance with updated safety standards across the rail network. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Railways, the audit will involve a comprehensive review of existing fire safety systems at stations across the country.

The exercise is designed to identify gaps in infrastructure and operational readiness, while recommending corrective measures to improve response mechanisms in the event of fire emergencies. The assessment will cover critical components of station infrastructure, including station buildings, electrical systems, air conditioning and ventilation networks, emergency exits, and firefighting equipment. Officials said these areas are central to ensuring rapid evacuation and effective containment in case of fire outbreaks, particularly at high-footfall stations where passenger density is significant.

In addition to structural and mechanical systems, the audit will also evaluate supporting safety infrastructure such as water availability, pumping arrangements, and sprinkler systems. These elements are considered essential for immediate firefighting response and are expected to be closely examined to determine their operational efficiency and reliability under emergency conditions. The Ministry of Railways stated that the programme is intended to provide a systematic evaluation of fire prevention and response capabilities across stations, with a focus on identifying vulnerable zones that may require urgent upgrades.
