Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday called for a long-term and scientific approach to address Assam’s recurring flood crisis, emphasising the need for stronger prevention measures, early warning systems and effective rehabilitation efforts. His remarks came as the state continued to deal with the impact of severe flooding that has affected thousands of residents. Gandhi expressed concern over the loss of lives due to the floods and extended condolences to the families of those who died. In a post on social media platform X, he also expressed solidarity with the people affected by the disaster and highlighted the need for a more permanent solution to Assam’s annual flood challenges.

The flood situation in Assam has resulted in significant damage across several districts, with the death toll rising to 68, according to officials. More than 5.24 lakh people remain affected across five districts, although authorities said the overall flood situation has shown signs of improvement in recent days. Calling for a comprehensive strategy, Gandhi said Assam requires a robust system that focuses not only on immediate relief but also on preventing repeated destruction caused by floods every year. He stressed the importance of using scientific methods, improving forecasting capabilities and strengthening disaster management mechanisms.

Assam has historically faced severe flooding due to its geographical location, heavy monsoon rainfall, river systems and recurring overflow from major waterways such as the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Every year, floods affect large parts of the state, damaging homes, agricultural land, infrastructure and disrupting the lives of thousands of people. Gandhi’s comments come amid continued discussions over flood management measures in Assam. Experts have often highlighted the importance of improved drainage systems, river management, embankment maintenance, climate-resilient infrastructure and advanced warning technologies to reduce the impact of recurring floods.

State authorities have been carrying out rescue and relief operations in affected areas, providing assistance to displaced families and monitoring water levels in vulnerable regions. Relief camps and emergency services have been deployed in several locations to support people affected by rising waters. The Congress leader also emphasised the importance of rehabilitation after the immediate crisis is controlled. He said affected communities need sustained support to rebuild their lives, restore livelihoods and recover from the economic impact caused by floods.

The recurring nature of Assam’s flood crisis has remained a major environmental and administrative challenge for successive governments. While short-term relief measures are carried out during emergencies, experts have repeatedly called for a coordinated long-term strategy involving scientific research, infrastructure development and community-based disaster preparedness. As floodwaters gradually recede in parts of Assam, authorities continue to assess the extent of damage and provide assistance to affected populations. The focus now remains on recovery efforts and developing stronger mechanisms to reduce the impact of future flooding events.
