Congress leader Rahul Gandhi secured bail from an MP-MLA court in Jharkhand’s Chaibasa today in a defamation case linked to alleged remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a 2018 rally. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha appeared before the court at 10:55 AM, as directed by the Jharkhand High Court.
“Rahul Gandhi ji appeared before the court as per the Jharkhand High Court’s direction. He sought bail, which was granted. We will now take the process forward,” said Gandhi’s counsel. The Congress MP had challenged the special court’s earlier order to appear on June 26, requesting a new date. On June 10, his counsel informed the high court that Gandhi could not attend on the specified date, and the court approved August 6 for his appearance.
The defamation case stems from a petition filed by Pratap Kumar, who alleged that Gandhi’s statements at a 2018 Chaibasa rally were intentionally defamatory and aimed at tarnishing Shah’s reputation. Gandhi arrived in Jharkhand on Tuesday to attend the funeral of former Chief Minister Shibu Soren in Ramgarh district, traveling by helicopter from Ranchi to Chaibasa, where a helipad was set up at Tata College Ground.
