Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria launched a hands-on response to the devastating floods in Ferozepur, holding a high-level meeting with district officials on Tuesday to assess the crisis and streamline relief efforts. The border district, one of 12 in Punjab battered by flooding, has seen widespread disruption due to overflowing rivers and heavy rainfall in neighboring states.
Kataria, kicking off a multi-district tour, met with Ferozepur Deputy Commissioner Deepshikha Sharma and Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh to review ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures. He issued firm directives to ensure timely assistance, emphasizing the need for effective coordination to support affected families. “Every effort must be made to provide immediate relief and restore normalcy,” Kataria said, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
The floods, triggered by swollen rivers like the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi, as well as seasonal rivulets, stem from torrential rains in the catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The deluge has inundated large swathes of Punjab, affecting districts including Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar. Homes, crops, and infrastructure have suffered significant damage, displacing thousands and prompting urgent calls for aid.

Kataria’s itinerary includes visits to Tarn Taran later today, followed by Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot on September 3, and Hoshiarpur and Sri Anandpur Sahib on September 4. His tour signals a proactive approach to addressing the crisis, with a focus on ensuring that relief reaches the most vulnerable communities swiftly. Local officials have been instructed to prioritize medical aid, food supplies, and temporary shelters for displaced residents.
The governor’s visit comes amid growing public concern over the scale of the floods, which have disrupted livelihoods and strained local resources. Community leaders and residents have welcomed Kataria’s engagement, hoping it will accelerate the delivery of central and state assistance. As Punjab grapples with one of its worst flooding episodes in recent years, Kataria’s leadership is seen as a critical step toward recovery, with his multi-district tour aimed at ensuring no affected area is left behind.
