The Punjab government has extended the closure of all educational institutions, including government, aided, recognised, and private schools, colleges, universities, and polytechnics, until September 7, 2025, as the state battles an unprecedented flood crisis. The announcement, made by Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, comes as the region grapples with the devastating aftermath of heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers.
In a post on X, Bains emphasised the severity of the situation, stating, "As directed by Hon'ble Chief Minister Punjab Shree Bhagwant Singh Mann Ji, all educational institutions across Punjab will remain closed until September 7 due to the ongoing flood crisis. We strongly urge everyone to adhere to the safety guidelines issued by local authorities to ensure their well-being." The decision follows an earlier directive that had shuttered schools and colleges until September 3, now extended due to the worsening conditions.
The floods, triggered by the swollen Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, along with seasonal rivulets, have been fuelled by relentless rainfall in Punjab and its neighbouring states, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The heavy downpours in the catchment areas of these rivers have caused water levels to surge, inundating vast swathes of Punjab. The state has been brought to a standstill, with entire communities submerged and infrastructure heavily damaged.

The human toll is staggering. The deluge has claimed at least 30 lives and affected more than 3.5 lakh people across Punjab, leaving families displaced, homes destroyed, and livelihoods shattered. Rescue and relief operations are underway, but the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local authorities, prompting urgent calls for residents to stay vigilant and comply with safety protocols.
The Punjab government is working closely with local administrations to provide aid and support to those affected, but the road to recovery remains daunting. As the floodwaters continue to rage, the extended closure of educational institutions underscores the gravity of the crisis and the priority of ensuring public safety.
Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and avoid flood-prone areas as the state braces for further challenges in the coming days.
