A delegation of the Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by senior leader Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday to discuss key issues affecting the state’s border districts. The meeting, attended by BJP national president Nitin Nabin, focused on matters ranging from national security to local development initiatives.
In a memorandum submitted during the meeting, Sodhi emphasized Punjab’s strategic significance, noting that the state not only borders India’s international frontier but also plays a vital role in national food security. He described Punjab as being at the frontline of India’s national security, underscoring the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by communities in border regions.
The delegation highlighted the plight of farmers cultivating land beyond the security fence near the international border. Sodhi stated that thousands of farmers have been working these lands for decades but continue to be denied formal ownership rights. “Granting ownership is not merely an administrative decision; it is a matter of dignity and justice for the farming community,” he asserted.

Infrastructure and connectivity improvements were also a focus of the discussions. The memorandum urged the four-laning of the Ferozepur–Fazilka road and its designation as a national highway, citing its dual importance for civilian travel and defence logistics. Additionally, Sodhi requested the reopening of the Hussainiwala check post, suggesting that, subject to national security considerations, its operation could enhance trade, stimulate local economic activity, and create employment opportunities.
Addressing natural disaster preparedness, Sodhi called for stronger flood protection measures in the border districts, including the construction of bundhs to safeguard lives, farmland, and livelihoods. He further advocated for employment generation through the establishment of central public sector units and private investment in the region, highlighting the potential to reduce drug abuse and curb illegal activities.
Finally, Sodhi proposed introducing a Vande Bharat Express connecting Fazilka to Shri Muktsar Sahib via Bathinda and onward to New Delhi. He emphasized that enhanced rail connectivity would facilitate regional economic growth and provide greater mobility for residents, strengthening both commerce and community ties across Punjab.
