An Air India flight operating from Delhi to Amritsar briefly entered Pakistani airspace during a go-around manoeuvre at Amritsar airport, prompting an internal investigation by the airline and notification to aviation regulators. The incident occurred on June 22 and involved flight AI479, according to a statement issued by the carrier.
Air India said the aircraft marginally crossed into Pakistani airspace while the crew was executing a go-around, a standard aviation procedure in which a pilot aborts a landing attempt and circles back for another approach. Such manoeuvres can be initiated for a variety of operational or safety reasons, including runway conditions, air traffic instructions or unstable landing parameters.
In its statement, the airline confirmed that the matter had been reported to the relevant regulatory authorities and that an internal review was underway. Air India did not provide additional details regarding the duration of the airspace infringement or the specific circumstances that led to the manoeuvre.

The airline stressed that passenger and crew safety remained its highest priority. It also indicated that the incident involved only a marginal entry into Pakistani airspace and that appropriate procedures were being followed to assess the sequence of events. No safety-related issues involving passengers or crew were reported.
The occurrence comes at a time when airspace management and flight operations in the region continue to receive heightened attention due to geopolitical sensitivities and operational restrictions affecting cross-border aviation. Even brief deviations into neighbouring airspace are generally subject to review by aviation authorities to ensure compliance with established flight procedures and international regulations.
Regulators are expected to examine flight data, air traffic control communications and operational records as part of the investigation. The findings will help determine the factors that contributed to the airspace infringement and whether any procedural changes or corrective measures are required to prevent similar incidents in the future.
