Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday challenged the government to hold a debate on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, asserting that the ongoing parliamentary disruptions reflect the ruling side’s inability to manage proceedings.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament House complex, Priyanka questioned why the government avoids discussing the SIR, a nationwide issue impacting democratic processes. “Parliament isn’t functioning. Why can’t they debate it? It’s their weakness that they can’t run the House,” the Wayanad MP stated, urging open dialogue.
The remarks follow sustained protests by opposition parties, including a demonstration led by Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi, calling for the SIR’s rollback in Bihar. The opposition claims the Election Commission’s exercise risks disenfranchising voters ahead of the state’s Assembly elections.
Priyanka noted that while Parliament discussed Operation Sindoor, the government sidesteps the SIR issue, asking, “What is their fear?” She advocated for a transparent debate to allow both sides to present their views, emphasizing the issue’s national importance.
Marking their tenth day, with a one-day pause on Monday due to the passing of former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren, the opposition’s protests have stalled both Houses. Priyanka’s call for discussion highlights the opposition’s push for accountability on a critical electoral matter.
