President Droupadi Murmu, speaking at the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) in Mysuru, announced her intention to learn Kannada, underscoring her deep respect for India’s diverse languages, cultures, and traditions. The statement came in response to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who, after addressing the gathering in Kannada, inquired if the dignitaries understood the language.
“I would like to tell the honourable chief minister that although Kannada is not my mother tongue, I deeply cherish all the languages, cultures, and traditions of my country. I hold great respect and regard for each of them,” Murmu said. She urged citizens to preserve their linguistic and cultural heritage, stating, “I wish that everyone continues to keep their language alive, preserves their traditions and culture, and moves forward in that direction.” With a smile, she added, “I will certainly make an effort to learn Kannada, little by little.”
Earlier, Murmu was warmly received at Mysuru airport by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Her commitment to learning Kannada highlights her dedication to fostering unity and celebrating India’s rich cultural diversity, setting an inspiring example for linguistic inclusivity.
