President Droupadi Murmu has nominated senior politician Harivansh Narayan Singh as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, according to an official Gazette notification issued on Friday, marking a continuation of his long-standing role in the Upper House of Parliament.
The nomination comes shortly after the conclusion of Harivansh’s previous tenure as a Rajya Sabha member from the Janata Dal (United) representing Bihar, which ended on April 9. He has also been serving as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha since 2018, a position that has given him a significant role in the functioning of the Upper House.
According to the notification, the nomination has been made under the constitutional provisions that empower the President of India to appoint members to the Rajya Sabha to fill vacancies among nominated seats. In this case, the seat became vacant following the retirement of former nominated member Ranjan Gogoi.
