Three employees of a Bengaluru-based company died after powerful waves swept them into the sea at Dubbanshashi Beach near Gokarna in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district. The incident occurred on Sunday when five members of a group of tourists entered the water for a swim and were caught in strong waves that pulled them away from the shore. Two people were rescued, but the remaining three drowned. The bodies of all three victims were subsequently recovered. The group was part of a 16-member team from Alorica Ecopace, a company based in Bengaluru's Bellandur area, which had travelled to Gokarna for a weekend outing.
According to preliminary information, the employees had arrived in Gokarna on Saturday evening and were staying at a private resort near the beach. The company group had reportedly organised the trip as an outing following the distribution of bonuses. On Sunday morning, five employees went into the Arabian Sea at Dubbanshashi Beach. The group was reportedly around 15 to 16 feet from the shore when sudden, powerful waves swept them into deeper waters. The tourists struggled to remain afloat as the sea pulled them further away from the beach, triggering an emergency rescue operation.
Lifeguards stationed near the beach and local fishermen immediately rushed to help after noticing the tourists in distress. They launched a rescue effort and managed to bring four of the five people out of the water, while the fifth remained missing. The rescued employees were identified as Nishanth DV and Mohammed Qasim, who received medical attention following the incident. Despite the efforts of the rescuers, three members of the group could not be saved. The incident prompted a search operation along the coastline to locate the missing employee, while police and emergency personnel reached the spot to coordinate the response.

The deceased were identified as Shobha Das Devendranath, 22, Mohammed Akram Ismail Ahmed and Vishwa AK, 24. Shobha, a native of Jharkhand, was reportedly taken for medical treatment in critical condition but later died. Mohammed Akram, who was identified as the team's leader, also died while being shifted to Manipal Hospital for advanced treatment. Vishwa, a resident of Bengaluru's Kalyan Nagar area, had initially remained missing after the incident. His body was subsequently recovered during the search operation, taking the death toll to three. The bodies were shifted to the mortuary at Karwar Medical College for further procedures.
The Gokarna police registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning incident. Officers are examining the sequence of events, the conditions at the beach and the circumstances in which the employees entered the water. The police have also sought information about the safety arrangements available at the location and the response provided by the resort and local rescue personnel. The incident has prompted authorities to remind tourism operators and accommodation providers about their responsibility to inform visitors of potential dangers at beaches, particularly when sea conditions are rough.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the risks associated with swimming in the Arabian Sea during periods of strong waves and unpredictable currents. Beaches along Karnataka's coastline can experience sudden changes in water conditions, with powerful currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shallow areas even when the sea appears relatively calm. Tourists visiting coastal destinations are generally advised to follow lifeguard instructions, observe warning signs and avoid entering the water when conditions are unsafe. Local police have also urged resort and homestay operators to take beach safety seriously and ensure that visitors are made aware of potential hazards. The investigation into Sunday's incident is continuing, while the two rescued employees are recovering after receiving medical assistance.
