Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described Pongal as a “global festival,” highlighting its growing international recognition and cultural significance. Celebrating the harvest festival at the residence of Union Minister L. Murugan in New Delhi, the Prime Minister lauded Tamil culture for placing farmers at the centre of life and promoting gratitude towards nature through tradition.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said Tamil culture is a shared heritage of not just India but the entire world. He noted that ancient texts such as the Thirukkural extensively discuss agriculture and the importance of farmers. According to him, Pongal teaches people to make respect for nature a way of life rather than a symbolic gesture.
Calling Tamil civilisation one of the world’s oldest living civilisations, the Prime Minister said it connects centuries of wisdom with the present and guides the future. He emphasized that modern India is progressing by drawing strength from its cultural roots, inspired by the enduring values of Tamil heritage.

Extending greetings on Makar Sankranti, the Prime Minister said the festival reflects India’s cultural diversity and spirit of togetherness. He conveyed wishes to people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, highlighting Sankranti’s special place in the lives of farmers and their families as a celebration of gratitude and hope.
PM Modi also stressed the urgent need to protect soil, conserve water, and ensure balanced use of natural resources. Highlighting initiatives such as Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and Amrit Sarovar, he said sustainable farming, agri-technology, and youth participation in agriculture will shape the future.
