A tragic accident unfolded at the Surajkund Mela on Saturday evening when a high-speed amusement ride named “Tsunami” snapped mid-air and crashed to the ground, killing an on-duty police inspector and injuring 13 others. The incident occurred around 6:15 pm while nearly 15 people were on the ride, triggering panic among visitors at the popular cultural fair.
A video circulating on social media captured the horrifying moments leading up to the collapse. The footage shows the swing ride rotating at speed as onlookers filmed and clicked photographs. Within seconds, one side of the structure appeared to give way, causing the entire frame to tilt and fall abruptly, prompting people nearby to run for safety.
Police said the mela grounds were immediately cleared following the accident. Rescue operations were led by District Magistrate Ayush Sinha, with support from police personnel and emergency response teams. All injured individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

The deceased was identified as Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was on duty at the fairgrounds and reportedly tried to assist people during the incident. The Surajkund Mela, which began on January 31, is scheduled to continue until February 15, even as safety measures across the fairgrounds come under renewed scrutiny following the incident.
