Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Lothal in Ahmedabad district on Saturday to evaluate the progress of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC), a Rs 4,500 crore initiative to celebrate the 5,000-year-old maritime legacy of the Indus Valley Civilisation’s prominent trading hub.
PM Modi will meet with officials to review ongoing developments at the site, which once thrived as a port and ship-repair center, according to a government release.
Spanning 375 acres allocated by the Gujarat government, the NMHC integrates history, education, research, and entertainment. The complex will feature the world’s tallest lighthouse museum, standing at 77 meters with a 65-meter open gallery offering sweeping views, alongside a floating restaurant, a 100-room tent city resort, and e-car facilities.
A Lothal Mini Recreation will vividly recreate Harappan architecture and lifestyle, complemented by four unique theme parks: Memorial, Maritime and Navy, Climate, and Adventure and Amusement.
The NMHC will also establish a maritime university to offer specialized degrees and foster international student exchanges, alongside a dedicated research institute and the world’s largest underwater-themed open gallery, reinforcing India’s commitment to preserving its maritime heritage while driving innovation.
