Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab on July 17, where he will inaugurate railway projects and launch development initiatives, marking his first visit to the state after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) decided to contest future elections independently without relying on alliances. The visit comes at a time when political activities in Punjab are gaining momentum ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station, a 110-year-old station modernised under the Central government’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The station is among 75 railway stations across the country being inaugurated as part of the government’s broader plan to upgrade railway infrastructure and improve passenger facilities.
The redevelopment project aims to provide enhanced amenities for passengers, improve connectivity, and transform railway stations into modern transport hubs. Along with the station inauguration, Modi will also lay the foundation stone for a new train service connecting Jalandhar and Varanasi, named the ‘Shri Guru Ravidass Ji Maharaj Express’.

The new train service carries cultural significance due to the connection of Guru Ravidass Ji with both Punjab and Varanasi. The revered saint’s teachings on equality and social justice continue to hold importance, particularly among sections of Punjab’s Scheduled Caste community. The project is also being viewed in the context of the state’s current political environment.
The BJP has begun preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit and is seeking to highlight development initiatives as part of its outreach strategy in Punjab. Party leaders have projected the event as an opportunity for Modi to interact with people of the state and showcase the Centre’s infrastructure and welfare programmes.
The visit is significant for the BJP as it prepares to build an independent political identity in Punjab after decades of relying on alliances, particularly with regional partners. Security arrangements and logistical preparations are underway at Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station, with party leaders and officials coordinating efforts ahead of the Prime Minister’s programme.
