Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Punjab on September 9 to personally evaluate the devastating flood situation that has crippled the state, announced BJP state unit chief Sunil Jakhar on Sunday. The visit comes as Punjab grapples with one of its worst flood disasters in decades, with swollen rivers and relentless rainfall causing widespread destruction, claiming 46 lives, and damaging crops across 1.75 lakh hectares.
Jakhar, in a post on X, emphasized Modi’s deep concern for Punjab’s plight, stating, “The Prime Minister is closely monitoring the situation and will assess ground realities to ensure maximum assistance for the people of Punjab.” The visit follows Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s tour of flood-hit areas in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Kapurthala on September 4, where he described the crisis as a “jal pralai (deluge).” Chouhan assured farmers of the Centre’s full support to mitigate their losses, particularly to waterlogged crops.
The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall in Punjab and overflowing rivers—Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi—fed by torrential rains in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, have inundated vast swathes of farmland and villages. Seasonal rivulets have compounded the destruction, leaving thousands of farmers facing financial ruin. Two central government teams, dispatched to assess the damage, are expected to submit their reports soon, paving the way for a comprehensive relief package. “The government of India stands firmly with the people of Punjab,” Jakhar affirmed.

Modi’s visit signals a proactive response from the Centre, with the Prime Minister expected to meet affected farmers, review relief efforts, and discuss long-term measures to prevent future flooding. The unprecedented scale of the disaster has prompted calls for immediate aid and infrastructure upgrades to protect Punjab’s agrarian economy. As the state battles to recover, Modi’s presence is likely to boost morale and expedite assistance for the flood-stricken communities.
