Continuing his decade-long tradition of honoring India’s armed forces, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will celebrate Diwali this year with Indian Navy personnel off the coast of Goa. Sources indicate that the Prime Minister’s visit is to commemorate the success of Operation Sindoor, India’s decisive counterstrike following the Pahalgam terror attack, highlighting the Navy’s critical role in safeguarding the nation.
Since assuming office in 2014, Prime Minister Modi has consistently spent Diwali with military personnel, paying tribute to their service and sacrifice. His Diwali celebrations have taken him to some of India’s most challenging and strategically significant locations. In 2014, he visited the Siachen Glacier in Ladakh, the world’s highest battlefield, to spend the Festival of Lights with troops stationed there. In 2015, he paid homage to the heroes of the 1965 Indo-Pak war at the Dograi War Memorial in Amritsar, Punjab.
In 2016, the Prime Minister met Border Security Force and Army personnel in Sumdo, Himachal Pradesh, near the India-China border. The following year, he celebrated Diwali with forces in the Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2018, Modi joined Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel in Harsil, Uttarakhand, and in 2019, he spent the festival with troops in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Prime Minister visited Longewala in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer, the site of a historic victory during the 1971 war. In 2021, he celebrated Diwali with troops in Nowshera, Jammu and Kashmir, and in 2022, he honored the martyrs of the Kargil War in Kargil. Over the past two years, Modi has spent Diwali with personnel stationed at Lepcha in Himachal Pradesh and Sir Creek in Gujarat, reinforcing his commitment to recognizing the armed forces’ contributions.
This year’s celebration off the Goa coast underscores the Prime Minister’s deep respect for the Indian Navy and its pivotal role in national security. The event is expected to boost the morale of the naval personnel and highlight the significance of Operation Sindoor in India’s defense strategy.
