Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s longstanding policy that military conflict offers no lasting solution to geopolitical disputes, specifically citing the crises in Iran/West Asia and Ukraine. Speaking at a joint press event with Finland’s president in New Delhi, Modi stressed that dialogue, diplomacy and the rule of law should guide the international community’s response to such conflicts.
“Only military conflict cannot solve any issue, whether it is Ukraine or West Asia,” Modi said, underscoring his message that negotiations and peaceful channels must be prioritised. His remarks came amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following recent military engagements involving the United States, Israel, and Iran — developments that have raised global concern over broader regional instability.
The Prime Minister’s remarks align with India’s repeated diplomatic efforts in recent weeks. India has engaged in high‑level talks with Gulf leaders to emphasise restraint, protect civilians and ensure the safety of the Indian diaspora in the region. Clerics and political figures within India also echoed the sentiment that war “is not the solution to any issue,” calling for proactive diplomatic mediation.

Globally, reactions to the tensions have been firm — European leaders urged Iran to pursue negotiated solutions and reiterated condemnation of attacks that threaten civilian populations and regional stability. At the Vatican, senior clerical officials labelled strikes in the region as alarming and in contradiction with international law, highlighting growing unease among world powers about military escalation.
Modi’s emphasis on diplomacy also resonates with India’s approach to the ongoing Ukraine war, where New Delhi continues to advocate for peaceful resolution through dialogue with all parties involved. Although India has maintained strategic ties with Russia, official sources and past statements from Modi have consistently underlined that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through battlefield outcomes alone.
Analysts view Modi’s stance as an attempt to balance India’s global diplomatic relationships while pushing for broader reforms in international institutions and conflict resolution mechanisms. By advocating for dialogue over force, India positions itself as a voice for moderation in a period marked by intensifying global insecurity.
