Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted a major environmental initiative in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, announcing that nearly one lakh saplings are being planted under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign. Speaking at a public event in Daman on World Environment Day, the Prime Minister emphasized that environmental conservation must remain a key component of the country’s development agenda. He said sustainable growth can only be achieved when economic progress and ecological responsibility move forward together.
Addressing the gathering, Modi noted that while development projects worth thousands of crores of rupees were being inaugurated and launched in the region, equal importance was being given to environmental protection. He described the large-scale plantation drive as a symbol of the administration’s commitment to sustainable development. According to the Prime Minister, initiatives such as tree planting not only help preserve the environment but also encourage greater public participation in conservation efforts.
The Prime Minister praised the Union Territory for its achievements in renewable energy, particularly highlighting Diu’s success in meeting its daytime electricity requirements through solar power. He said the region has emerged as a model for clean energy adoption and sustainable governance. Modi also expressed pride in the fact that government buildings in the Union Territory have achieved the milestone of using 100 percent solar energy, demonstrating the effectiveness of renewable energy investments.

He further stated that the administration is expanding rooftop solar initiatives to encourage households to generate their own electricity. Under the programme, residents can supply surplus power to the grid and earn additional income. The Prime Minister said such initiatives not only reduce dependence on conventional energy sources but also create economic opportunities for citizens while supporting the broader goal of energy sustainability.
Modi also commended residents for actively participating in cleanliness campaigns alongside environmental programmes. He noted that cleanliness has increasingly become a part of the region’s culture and daily life, reflecting a strong sense of civic responsibility. According to him, community-driven efforts play a crucial role in maintaining environmental standards and improving the quality of life for residents.
The Prime Minister stressed that environmental stewardship should not be viewed as a separate objective but as an integral part of development planning. Referring to the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, he urged citizens to continue contributing to environmental protection by planting trees, adopting renewable energy solutions and supporting cleanliness initiatives. He reaffirmed that sustainability would remain a central pillar of future development strategies and called for collective efforts to build a greener and more environmentally responsible India.
