Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly ordered a reduction in the size of his official convoy, limiting it to just two sport utility vehicles as part of a broader push toward austerity and lower fuel consumption. Recent visuals circulating online showed the Prime Minister travelling with a convoy consisting primarily of a Range Rover Sentinel and a Toyota Fortuner, marking a significant downsizing from the larger motorcades traditionally associated with high-level government security movements.
According to reports, the decision was taken in response to concerns surrounding fuel conservation and efficient resource use amid evolving global economic conditions. The Prime Minister is also understood to have instructed the Special Protection Group (SPG), the agency responsible for his security, to gradually increase the use of electric vehicles within the convoy. Reports further stated that Modi directed officials not to purchase new vehicles specifically for this transition and instead optimize the use of the existing fleet wherever possible.
Despite the reduction in convoy size, officials are expected to ensure that all mandatory security protocols outlined in the government’s “Blue Book” guidelines remain fully intact. The SPG’s operational framework requires multiple layers of protection for the Prime Minister, including secure transportation, route sanitization, and emergency response preparedness. Security experts note that while convoy sizes can be adjusted for logistical or symbolic reasons, core protective measures are generally maintained without compromise.

One of the two vehicles retained in the convoy, the Range Rover Sentinel, is widely regarded as one of the most advanced armoured SUVs used by heads of state and high-ranking officials globally. The vehicle features VR8-level ballistic protection capable of resisting armour-piercing ammunition and surviving severe explosive attacks. It is also equipped with advanced defensive systems, including fire suppression technology, an independent oxygen supply system, and reinforced communication capabilities designed for emergency situations. The SUV has frequently been seen as a central component of the Prime Minister’s security fleet during official movements.
The Toyota Fortuner, the second vehicle reportedly retained in the convoy, is known for its durability and reliability, particularly in challenging road and weather conditions. A popular model in the Indian market, the Fortuner is commonly used by government agencies and security forces due to its robust build and adaptability. In India, the SUV is offered with both petrol and diesel engine options, with four-wheel-drive capability available on select variants. Security-modified versions used in official convoys are typically upgraded with additional protective equipment and communication systems.
The move to streamline the Prime Minister’s convoy comes at a time when governments and public institutions worldwide are increasingly emphasizing sustainability, cost efficiency, and reduced fuel dependency. Analysts say the decision also carries symbolic value, projecting a message of restraint and operational efficiency while balancing the complex security requirements associated with protecting the country’s highest elected office.
