Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday commemorated the 64th Goa Liberation Day by remembering the sacrifices of freedom fighters who played a crucial role in ending Portuguese rule. Calling it a “defining chapter” in India’s national journey, the Prime Minister said their courage and conviction continue to inspire the country’s efforts toward inclusive development and progress.
Goa Liberation Day, observed annually on December 19, marks the success of Operation Vijay carried out by Indian armed forces in 1961. The operation led to Goa’s liberation after more than four centuries of colonial rule. The occasion remains a symbol of national unity, resilience, and the triumph of freedom over injustice.
The main state-level celebrations were held at the Goa University Ground in Taleigao, where Chief Minister Pramod Sawant hoisted the national flag. Addressing the gathering, Sawant said Goa’s development trajectory has been remarkable despite achieving freedom later than many other states. He highlighted achievements such as 100 per cent literacy, improved infrastructure, household drinking water access, and strong human development indicators.

Recalling Goa’s liberation struggle, the chief minister referred to historic movements like the Pinto and Cuncolim revolts, describing them as testaments to the indomitable spirit of Goans. He paid tribute to prominent freedom fighters including T B Cunha, Balarai Mapari, and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, as well as soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the liberation movement.
Sawant also credited former chief minister Manohar Parrikar for laying the foundation of modern Goa through people-centric governance. Emphasising environmental responsibility, he urged industries and citizens to maintain cleanliness to protect Goa’s natural beauty and boost tourism. He noted that the state has commissioned specialised waste management facilities to handle hazardous and electronic waste.
President Droupadi Murmu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other national leaders also extended greetings on the occasion. The celebrations concluded with the felicitation of police and emergency service personnel for gallantry and meritorious service, along with cultural performances by students. Leaders urged citizens to work collectively toward the goals of “Viksit Goa” and “Viksit Bharat.”
