Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday emphasized that peace remains the cornerstone of Assam’s development, asserting that the northeastern state has undergone significant transformation over the past decade under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. He made the remarks while addressing party workers from Assam as part of an outreach initiative ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Speaking during the ‘Mera Booth, Sabse Mazboot Samvaad’ programme, Modi said Assam had endured prolonged instability in the past but has since witnessed a shift toward stability and growth. He credited the BJP’s “double-engine government” — referring to the party’s presence at both the state and central levels — for prioritizing peace and governance. The initiative aimed to directly engage booth-level workers and strengthen grassroots mobilization in the poll-bound state.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the government has signed 12 peace agreements with various organizations in the Northeast, underscoring what he described as a sustained effort to bring long-term stability to the region. He contrasted this with the previous Congress governments, alleging that earlier agreements were largely symbolic and failed to address ground realities. According to Modi, these shortcomings left many young people in Assam disillusioned and vulnerable to unrest.

Continuing his criticism of the opposition, Modi accused the Congress of neglecting key regional concerns, including those related to the Bodo community. He said previous administrations had failed to implement agreements effectively, whereas the current government has focused on translating commitments into tangible outcomes. He added that recent efforts have helped foster a renewed sense of confidence among the people of Assam.
Modi also called on BJP workers to intensify outreach efforts, particularly among first-time voters, urging them to highlight what he termed the “misrule” of earlier governments. He cautioned that even minor political missteps could reverse the gains made in the state and stressed the importance of vigilance during the electoral process. Additionally, he warned against the spread of AI-generated misinformation, asking party workers to educate voters about such content.
The elections for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance seeking to retain power for a third consecutive term. The alliance has governed the state since 2016, and the upcoming polls are expected to test its development narrative, particularly its claims of improved peace and stability in the region.
