Opposition MPs from INDIA bloc parties staged a dramatic protest in the Parliament House complex on Tuesday, decrying the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar. Donning white T-shirts emblazoned with “Minta Devi” and “124 Not Out,” referencing an alleged 124-year-old first-time voter listed in Bihar’s electoral rolls, MPs including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, TMC’s Derek O’Brien, DMK’s TR Baalu, and NCP(SP)’s Supriya Sule gathered near Makar Dwar. They brandished posters and raised slogans demanding the SIR’s cancellation.
The protest, now in its 15th day, featured banners proclaiming “Our Vote. Our Right. Our Fight” and accusing the SIR of “Silent Invisible Rigging.” Congress MP Manickam Tagore alleged that the Election Commission, under Rajeev Kumar and Gyanesh Kumar, is acting as a “department of the BJP,” pointing to Minta Devi’s inclusion as evidence of voter list fraud. Placards reading “Stop SIR” and “vote chori” underscored claims of collusion between the EC and the government.
The opposition has disrupted both Houses of Parliament, alleging the SIR aims to disenfranchise Bihar voters ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. The Monsoon session, starting July 21, has seen repeated adjournments, with little business conducted except for discussions on Operation Sindoor.
On Monday, opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Sharad Pawar, marched toward the EC office but were stopped by police barricades outside the PTI Building. Some MPs sat on the road, while women parliamentarians climbed barricades, leading to brief detentions at Parliament Street Police Station. All were later released.
