A tragic boat accident in Maharashtra’s Beed district left one pilgrim dead after a vessel carrying 35 devotees overturned in a river at Purushottampuri on Wednesday. The incident occurred during a religious gathering, raising concerns over safety arrangements and overcrowding on small watercraft used for local transport during such events.
According to eyewitness accounts, the boat was reportedly carrying more passengers than its permitted capacity. The excess load is believed to have caused the vessel to lose balance before overturning in the river. Locals and police personnel rushed to the spot immediately after the accident and managed to rescue most of the passengers.
However, one woman identified as Pramila Rathod lost her life in the incident. Another passenger, Sindhubai Mawal from Mahagaon in Washim district, sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to a nearby hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. Officials said the injured woman’s condition is being closely monitored.

Witnesses further stated that the boat was caught in a strong current and sank within seconds, leaving little time for passengers to react. The swift response by local residents and emergency teams helped prevent a higher casualty count, though the tragedy has highlighted potential lapses in safety management during large gatherings.
Beed District Collector Vivek Johnson has ordered a Sub-Divisional Officer-level inquiry into the incident. The probe will examine how the boat was allowed to exceed its capacity and whether safety regulations were properly enforced. Authorities have stated that strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible for negligence.
Officials also noted that adequate security arrangements had been put in place for the religious congregation at Purushottampuri. However, they acknowledged that the accident exposed gaps in enforcement, particularly in regulating transport arrangements for large crowds near water bodies. Further investigation is underway to determine accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
