Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah delivered a powerful Independence Day address on Friday, stating he has paid a political price for placing his faith in India's democracy and the Central government to restore the region’s statehood and special status.

Speaking at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, Abdullah admitted taking a calculated political risk by siding with a peaceful, democratic approach rather than confrontation. “I believed that whatever Jammu and Kashmir needs can be achieved through India’s democracy. Probably, I have paid a political price for it,” he said.

The chief minister also addressed recent speculation that the Centre would announce the reinstatement of J&K’s statehood around Independence Day. Though initially skeptical, Abdullah said he was repeatedly told that the documents were ready and an announcement was imminent. “But the announcement never came. The ray of hope is fading, but we will not give up,” he affirmed.

Despite the challenges posed by dual power centers under Union Territory governance, Abdullah defended his administration’s performance over the past 10 months. He highlighted key resolutions passed in the legislative assembly, including those advocating for the return of special status and full statehood.

He further outlined his government’s initiatives in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, transport, tourism, agriculture, and social welfare, emphasizing that all efforts were made to utilize the limited powers available to benefit the people.

Abdullah’s address signals growing frustration in the Valley as hopes for political restoration remain unmet, even amid symbolic national celebrations.
