Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday paid tribute to Lieutenant General Sagat Singh Rathore, describing his life and military service as a powerful example of courage, leadership, and dedication to the nation. Birla was speaking at the unveiling ceremony of a statue dedicated to the late military leader in Churu district, Rajasthan.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Union Agriculture Minister Bhagirath Choudhary, Om Prakash Mathur, and senior leader Rajendra Rathore. The gathering marked a formal recognition of Sagat Singh’s contributions to India’s military history and his role in several key national operations.
In his address, Birla recalled Sagat Singh’s distinguished career, highlighting his service during the Second World War, his involvement in the Goa Liberation Movement, and his leadership in strengthening India’s defence preparedness at the Nathu La border. He said these milestones reflected the officer’s strategic vision and commitment to safeguarding national interests.

Birla also referred to Sagat Singh’s role during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, stating that his leadership was instrumental in operations that led to the surrender of Pakistani forces in Dhaka, an event that ultimately contributed to the creation of Bangladesh. He described this as one of the defining chapters in India’s military history.
Emphasising Rajasthan’s long-standing tradition of military service, the Lok Sabha Speaker said the state has consistently produced individuals who embody bravery and sacrifice. He added that a strong sense of national duty is deeply rooted in the region’s cultural identity, with many families contributing to the armed forces over generations.
Calling the statue more than just a memorial, Birla said it should serve as a lasting source of inspiration for future generations. He urged young people to draw motivation from national heroes like Sagat Singh and dedicate themselves to nation-building with courage and commitment. Concluding his remarks, Birla said the legacy of Lieutenant General Sagat Singh remains a matter of national pride, noting that his life demonstrates how determination and leadership can overcome even the most difficult challenges.
