In a significant push towards sustainable urban transport, the Odisha government announced on September 5, 2025, its plan to expand the ‘Ama Bus’ service by adding 600 electric buses to its fleet, according to Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra. This ambitious initiative aims to meet the state’s growing demand for eco-friendly public transportation, with an estimated need for 1,000 e-buses.
The expansion will see 200 e-buses procured directly by the state government, while the central government will contribute an additional 400. The rollout will begin with 25 e-buses deployed in Sambalpur, followed by a phased introduction in Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Berhampur, and Angul. “With the rollout of 600 e-buses, Odisha is taking a decisive step towards greener cities and smarter urban transport,” Mahapatra stated, emphasizing the initiative’s role in fostering sustainable urban development.
Operated by the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) under the ‘Ama Bus’ initiative, the service prioritizes safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation. Odisha has already achieved a notable milestone, securing the 5th position nationally in e-bus operations with its existing fleet of 450 e-buses. This expansion aligns with national flagship schemes like PM-E Bus Sewa and PM-E Drive, under which 14,329 e-buses are operational across India.
