Tribal organizations from Assam’s Karbi Anglong, Meghalaya’s Garo Hills, and Tripura have announced a unified protest in Delhi after August 20, 2025, to demand the creation of separate states for indigenous communities. Under the banner of the National Federation for New States (NFNS), activists will stage a sit-in at Jantar Mantar, aiming to amplify their long-standing call for statehood, as affirmed during the NFNS national convention held in Shillong.
NFNS Secretary Stalin Ingti emphasized the urgency of their cause, stating, “This is not a new demand. We seek separate states for Karbi Anglong, Garo Hills, and Tripura, which have been overlooked despite Telangana’s successful statehood.” The federation has been mobilizing support through meetings in Tura, Karbi Anglong, Delhi, Vidarbha, and Tripura.
NFNS Vice President and Garo Hills Autonomous District Council Deputy Chief Executive Member Nikman Ch Marak announced plans to seek a formal dialogue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah post-August 23 to advance their agenda.
The NFNS coalition includes prominent groups such as the Garo Hills State Movement Committee, Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), Hill State People’s Socialist Party (HSPSP), and the Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) of Karbi Anglong, alongside organizations from Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Bundelkhand, and Ladakh.
The planned protest underscores deep-rooted grievances over the neglect of Northeast tribal communities’ aspirations for self-governance, contrasting their struggles with the precedent set by Telangana’s formation in 2013.
