The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) unanimously authorized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President J P Nadda to select its vice presidential candidate, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Thursday.
The decision was made during a key meeting at the Parliament complex, attended by prominent NDA leaders, including Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, JD(U)’s Lalan Singh, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, TDP’s Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, and LJP (Ram Vilas)’s Chirag Paswan. Rajnath Singh chaired the session, which underscored the alliance’s cohesive strategy following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s abrupt resignation as Vice President on July 21, 2025.
The move comes as the NDA, holding a majority with 422 MPs in the 788-member electoral college, prepares for the vice presidential election scheduled by September 9, 2025. Speculation surrounds potential candidates, with names like JD(U)’s Harivansh Narayan Singh, a current Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, and Union Minister Ram Nath Thakur gaining traction due to their bipartisan appeal and alignment with coalition dynamics.
Posts on X reflect public curiosity, with some suggesting a preference for a candidate from marginalized communities to balance regional representation, given President Droupadi Murmu’s eastern India roots. The opposition INDIA bloc is expected to field a contender, potentially making the race competitive. Modi and Nadda’s decision, backed by allies like Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu, will shape the NDA’s narrative ahead of key state elections.
