A National Commission for Women (NCW) member, Archana Majumdar, visited Panskura Super Speciality Hospital in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur on Saturday, following the alleged rape of a contractual worker on September 14. After inspecting the facility and meeting with hospital staff, Majumdar criticized the hospital’s “insufficient” security measures, particularly the inadequate CCTV coverage. She noted that while the hospital has 40 cameras, critical areas like the maternity ward, doctors’ restroom, and operation theatre lack surveillance, leaving staff vulnerable.
The prime accused, a hospital employee, was arrested after an FIR was filed at Panskura Police Station based on the victim’s complaint. The incident has sparked further allegations, with several female employees reporting sexual abuse at the facility.
Majumdar, who spent over two hours gathering details from the hospital superintendent and staff, highlighted systemic issues, including a lack of accountability and administrative apathy. She also referenced a 2008 case involving the same accused, indicating a pattern of unchecked misconduct.
In a post on X, Majumdar revealed that over 40 women, including two rape victims, shared their experiences with her during the visit. She described a troubling history of “sexual exploitation, religious abuse, hospital syndicate, and administrative apathy” at the facility, drawing parallels to the unresolved issues following the high-profile RG Kar case. Majumdar plans to meet the complainant at a government bungalow in Panskura to discuss the case further.

The NCW has vowed to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced security measures. “Women working in hospitals must be protected,” Majumdar stated, calling for comprehensive surveillance, accountability, and robust safety protocols to prevent future incidents. The case underscores ongoing challenges in ensuring workplace safety for women in West Bengal’s healthcare sector.
