The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted a cross-border heroin cartel in Jammu and Kashmir, seizing 5.16 kg of high-grade heroin worth crores and arresting three people, including the alleged mastermind of the syndicate. The operation forms part of the agency's continuing crackdown on drug trafficking networks suspected of being connected to Pakistan-backed narco-terror activities in the Union Territory. The operation began after the NCB received what officials described as a precise intelligence input about the movement of a heroin consignment. Acting on the information, NCB officials intercepted a vehicle at Panjirthi in Jammu on August 22.
During the search, officers recovered 5.16 kg of high-grade heroin from two men who are residents of Baramulla. The seizure prompted investigators to immediately focus on identifying the people responsible for supplying and coordinating the movement of the drugs. The two suspected traffickers were questioned following their arrest, and investigators said their interrogation provided crucial information about the alleged network behind the consignment. According to officials, the men disclosed details about the kingpin who had allegedly supplied the heroin.
The information enabled the NCB to move quickly against the suspected mastermind rather than limiting the investigation to the two individuals caught transporting the contraband. Following the leads generated during interrogation, NCB teams launched an intensive follow-up operation. Investigators conducted surveillance and traced the alleged mastermind to Leh, where he was reportedly hiding. The suspect was arrested on Monday, within 48 hours of the original seizure in Jammu. The quick operation marked a second major step in the investigation and allowed the agency to target the person it believes was responsible for organising or supplying the drug consignment.

The NCB said the operation reflects its broader strategy of dismantling complete drug trafficking networks rather than focusing only on couriers and seizures. By identifying and pursuing individuals believed to be operating higher within the network, investigators seek to disrupt the supply chain and prevent additional consignments from reaching their intended destinations.
The seizure also comes amid heightened concern among security and law-enforcement agencies over the relationship between narcotics trafficking and cross-border networks in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have repeatedly focused on suspected Pakistan-backed narco-terror networks, which are believed to use illegal drug trafficking as one means of generating funds and supporting wider illicit operations.
