Nagaland commenced a seven-day state mourning period on Saturday, August 16, 2025, following the death of Governor La Ganesan, who passed away at age 80 on Friday night in a Chennai hospital. During this period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the state, and all official entertainment by government departments has been suspended, according to a Home Department notification.
Ganesan, appointed as Nagaland’s 21st governor on February 12, 2023, and assuming office on February 20, succumbed to complications from a head injury sustained after collapsing at his Chennai residence on August 8. Admitted to the ICU of a private hospital, he received intensive treatment but passed away on Friday night, as confirmed by the Kohima Raj Bhavan and the state’s chief secretary.
The veteran BJP leader, with roots in the RSS, was mourned by prominent figures, including President Droupadi Murmu, who noted his contributions to Tamil Nadu and India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised his nationalist dedication and passion for Tamil culture.
