Mumbai was thrown into chaos on July 22, 2025, when a devastating landslide struck Bhandup (West) amid relentless heavy rainfall, reducing a row of houses to rubble. The disaster unfolded at 7:30 PM in the Khindipada area near Sai Niketan CHS, opposite Omega School, as mud and soil cascaded down a nearby hill. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), portions of two already-vacated houses collapsed under the onslaught, prompting the urgent evacuation of three to four neighboring homes as a precaution.
The city, battered by over 100 mm of rain in just 48 hours, saw Colaba and Santacruz record 87 mm and 85 mm respectively, triggering an orange alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Emergency teams, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, S Ward staff, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rushed to the site, averting tragedy with no reported injuries. The deluge also caused widespread waterlogging, forcing the temporary closure of the Andheri subway and rerouting traffic, while minor incidents like tree falls and short circuits plagued the city.
With the IMD forecasting more heavy showers and winds up to 50 km/h through July 24, the BMC has urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay vigilant, particularly in low-lying and landslide-prone areas. Control rooms across all wards are on high alert, with dewatering pumps deployed to combat flooding.
As Mumbai battles nature’s fury, authorities are working tirelessly to keep the city safe from further devastation.
