The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a high tide advisory for citizens in Mumbai ahead of the intensified monsoon season, warning residents to stay away from the seashore during periods of high tide and adverse weather conditions. The civic body has urged strict compliance with safety instructions issued in coordination with the Mumbai Police and disaster management authorities to prevent accidents and coastal risks.
According to the advisory issued on Friday, Mumbai is already witnessing isolated pre-monsoon showers along with rising tidal activity along its coastline. Authorities have cautioned that the combination of heavy rainfall and high tides significantly increases the risk of coastal flooding, particularly in low-lying areas of the city that are vulnerable during the southwest monsoon season.
The BMC has released a detailed schedule of expected high tide periods extending through the monsoon months until September. Officials noted that the most critical phase is expected between June 14 and June 19, when tide levels are projected to reach between 4.64 metres and 4.87 metres. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast light rainfall and thundershowers in the city between June 14 and 16, which could further intensify coastal conditions.

Additional high tide spells have been predicted in July, August, and September. In July, tides between July 13 and July 18 may reach up to 4.89 metres, while August is expected to witness high tides between August 12 and August 16, ranging from 4.50 metres to 4.83 metres. September may see prolonged tidal activity between September 10 and September 28, with multiple instances of tides crossing 4.5 metres.
Officials have repeatedly advised citizens not to venture near the sea or coastal promenades during high tide periods, especially when accompanied by strong winds or rainfall. The civic body has also stressed that residents should strictly follow warnings issued by the BMC, Mumbai Police, and emergency response agencies to avoid dangerous situations and ensure public safety.
With the southwest monsoon progressing across Maharashtra, authorities remain on alert for potential flooding and waterlogging incidents in Mumbai. The BMC has assured that disaster response teams are on standby and monitoring coastal and weather conditions continuously to respond to any emergencies during the high-risk monsoon period.
