The Madhya Pradesh assembly convened on Wednesday to pay solemn tributes to the victims of the devastating flash floods in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, and to former governor Satyapal Malik, who passed away on Tuesday at age 79. Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar led the House in observing a moment of silence, acknowledging the loss of a revered leader and the tragic Dharali calamity, before adjourning proceedings until noon as a mark of respect.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav described Malik as a respected figure across political divides, lauding his “unique” contributions as a veteran farmer leader and administrator who served as governor of multiple states, including Jammu and Kashmir during the abrogation of Article 370. Yadav also expressed deep sorrow over the Uttarkashi disaster, noting the sudden surge in river levels as a testament to its severity, and confirmed he had discussed relief efforts with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar praised Malik’s integrity, highlighting his commitment to justice and his courage to challenge authority. Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla emphasized Malik’s significant role during his tenure in Jammu and Kashmir, while senior Congress leader Ajay Singh called his passing a profound loss, noting his rare distinction of serving as both a Union minister and governor of five to six states. Singh also addressed the Uttarkashi floods, believed to be triggered by a cloudburst, which have claimed at least four lives and led to the rescue of 150 people. He urged greater caution against environmental exploitation, citing the disaster as a stark reminder of nature’s limits.
