The Lok Sabha was plunged into disarray for the second time today, adjourning until 2 PM as opposition MPs unleashed vociferous protests demanding a discussion on the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar. The uproar, which saw opposition members storming the Well of the House, reflects escalating tensions over the Election Commission’s voter revision exercise ahead of Bihar’s Assembly elections.
When the House reconvened at 12 noon, opposition MPs, including those from Congress, intensified their agitation, brandishing placards and chanting for an immediate rollback of the SIR. Despite efforts by presiding officer Sandhya Ray to proceed with the day’s agenda, including the laying of papers and the introduction of a bill to amend the Manipur GST Act, 2017 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the relentless protests drowned out proceedings. Ray urged the opposition to allow the House to function, noting that junior MPs could learn from their seniors, but adjourned the session till 2 PM as the din persisted.
Earlier, at 11 am, Speaker Om Birla faced similar disruptions during the Question Hour, where opposition MPs raised slogans and displayed placards. Birla, attempting to address queries on the Smart City Mission, criticized the opposition for “systematically disrupting” proceedings and flouting democratic norms. “The people who elected you are watching,” he warned, urging members to submit notices per rules for consideration. After just 10 minutes, he adjourned the House until noon.

The opposition’s focus on the SIR, which they claim risks disenfranchising voters in Bihar, has paralyzed the Monsoon session since July 21. Apart from discussions on Operation Sindoor, little legislative progress has been made due to repeated adjournments. The ongoing standoff underscores a deepening divide, with the opposition accusing the government of sidestepping critical issues, leaving the nation awaiting resolution as the session remains gridlocked.
