The Rajya Sabha descended into turmoil this morning, forcing an adjournment until 2 pm as Opposition members fiercely protested the rejection of their 25 adjournment notices. The uproar erupted during the when Deputy Chairman Harivansh announced that none of the notices, submitted under Rule 267 to suspend the day’s scheduled business, met the necessary criteria for acceptance. This sparked immediate outrage among Opposition MPs, who demanded clarity and accountability from the Chair.
Prominent leaders, including Tiruchi Siva (DMK), Sanjay Singh (AAP), and Pramod Tiwari (Congress), challenged the decision, pressing Harivansh to specify the requirements for Rule 267 notices. Several MPs from Congress, TMC, and other Opposition parties rose in protest, refusing to let the session proceed smoothly. Their vocal dissent highlighted growing frustration with the perceived dismissal of critical issues they sought to raise, though specific topics of the notices were not disclosed by the Chair.
Harivansh, attempting to restore order, noted that the ongoing Monsoon session had already lost 51 hours and 30 minutes to disruptions. He appealed to the Opposition to allow the House to function, urging them to utilize Zero Hour mentions to address their concerns. However, the unrelenting protests drowned out his calls, leaving no choice but to adjourn the proceedings until the afternoon.
