The Rajya Sabha was adjourned until 2 pm on Tuesday as opposition parties, led by Congress, created a storm over claims that Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel had replaced marshals inside the House last week.
The uproar began shortly after the Zero Hour, when Deputy Chairman Harivansh expressed dismay over Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge sharing a letter with the media. In the letter, dated Friday, Kharge alleged that CISF personnel were deployed in the House, obstructing opposition leaders’ democratic rights.
Both Harivansh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju firmly rejected Kharge’s claims, asserting that the personnel in question were from parliamentary security, not CISF. Rijiju accused Kharge of misleading the House, while Leader of the House J P Nadda slammed the opposition for engaging in “anarchism.”
The protests, which disrupted the tabling of listed papers and reports, forced the adjournment after heated exchanges. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between the opposition and the government, stalling parliamentary proceedings.
