On Wednesday, a coalition of opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc staged a vehement protest outside Parliament’s Makar Dwar, targeting the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The demonstration, which took place before the start of the day’s parliamentary proceedings, saw MPs from Congress, DMK, TMC, Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), JMM, RJD, and Left parties unite in their call for the SIR’s immediate rollback and a parliamentary discussion on the issue.
Prominent leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, T R Baalu, Sanjay Raut, and Kalyan Banerjee, led the charge, raising slogans like “Save democracy” and “Stop vote-bandi.” Many MPs wore black clothing and carried placards to highlight their opposition to the SIR, accusing the exercise of being a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters ahead of Bihar’s upcoming Assembly elections.
The protest reflects growing tensions over the SIR, which the opposition alleges is designed to manipulate the electoral process in the state. The issue has already disrupted proceedings in both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, with opposition MPs persistently pressing for accountability and transparency in the voter roll revision process.
