In a significant step toward enhancing tourism in Northeast India, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Mizoram government to promote both inbound and outbound tourism. The agreement, formalized earlier in August 2025, coincides with the near completion of the Bairabi-Sairang New Railway Line Project, which will connect Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital, to the national railway network.
This development is poised to revolutionize travel and economic opportunities in the hill state, making its vibrant culture and natural beauty more accessible to visitors, according to a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) statement released on Monday, August 11, 2025.
Under the MoU, IRCTC will serve as the primary marketing agency, collaborating with Mizoram Tourism to craft curated travel packages that showcase the state’s unique offerings, including its lush green hills, pristine waterfalls, emerald valleys, and rich heritage sites. Mizoram Tourism will provide access to its infrastructure, such as lodges and local transport, while working with IRCTC to develop destination management companies and service providers.
These efforts will highlight Mizoram’s cultural tapestry, featuring vibrant festivals with bamboo dances, traditional folk music, and ceremonial rituals, offering tourists an immersive experience. The partnership aims to foster sustainable tourism by engaging local communities and ensuring that economic benefits reach small-scale service providers.
The agreement aligns with IRCTC’s ambitious ‘Discover NE beyond Guwahati’ programme, which includes plans for a special tourist train featuring Aizawl as a key destination. Expected to launch soon after train services to Sairang commence, this budget-friendly service will cater to travelers seeking authentic and sustainable experiences in Northeast India.
The railway connectivity to Sairang, just a short distance from Aizawl, is anticipated to boost visitor numbers, reduce travel costs, and open new avenues for economic growth in Mizoram. As the state prepares to welcome tourists, this collaboration marks a pivotal moment in showcasing Mizoram’s untapped tourism potential to the world.
