A minor earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale struck Vijayapura district in Karnataka today, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). The tremor, recorded at 07:43:38 AM, had its epicentre located 2.5 km northwest of Hattarkihal village in Yaranal gram panchayat, Basavana Bagewadi taluk, at a shallow depth of 5 km.
KSNDMC reassured residents that the quake’s low magnitude and intensity pose no significant threat. “The community need not panic as the observed intensity is minimal,” the agency stated. The seismic intensity map indicates that mild vibrations may have been felt within a 50-60 km radius of the epicentre, but no damage to infrastructure or injuries have been reported. The epicentre lies in Seismic Zone III, a region with low seismic risk and no known structural discontinuities, as per the tectonic map.
Local residents in Hattarkihal and nearby areas reported feeling slight tremors, described as a brief shaking sensation. “It was mild, like a truck passing by,” said a local farmer, Ramesh Patil. Authorities have confirmed that the quake is unlikely to cause any harm, though they continue to monitor the region for any aftershocks. KSNDMC emphasized that such low-magnitude quakes are common in stable tectonic zones and rarely lead to significant consequences.

This event follows a pattern of minor seismic activity in Karnataka, which, while located in a relatively low-risk seismic zone, occasionally experiences small tremors. The KSNDMC urged residents to stay informed through official channels and avoid panic, reinforcing that Vijayapura’s geological stability minimizes the risk of major earthquakes.
