The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has announced plans for a citywide revamp of surface parking lots in a bid to reduce dust pollution and improve urban air quality. Officials said the initiative will focus on resurfacing existing lots, introducing proper drainage, and implementing measures to limit the spread of dust from frequently used parking areas.

According to MCD sources, the revamp will include laying paved surfaces or concrete blocks, upgrading entry and exit points, and adding greenery buffers around parking zones. These measures are expected to minimise particulate matter generated by vehicle movement and improve pedestrian safety.

The civic body also highlighted that unpaved and poorly maintained parking areas contribute significantly to dust pollution in residential and commercial hubs, exacerbating respiratory and health issues for local residents. The revamp project aims to address environmental concerns while modernizing urban infrastructure.

In addition to paving, MCD plans to integrate stormwater management systems to prevent waterlogging during monsoons, which often worsens dust and mud accumulation in open parking areas. Officials noted that the project will be rolled out in phases, prioritising high-traffic zones and areas near schools, hospitals, and markets.

Urban planners have welcomed the initiative, pointing out that well-maintained parking infrastructure not only reduces pollution but also enhances traffic management and the overall aesthetic of city spaces. They emphasised that the MCD’s approach could serve as a model for other metropolitan areas facing similar environmental challenges.

The civic administration expects that by improving surface parking facilities, the city will see a notable reduction in airborne dust, contributing to healthier surroundings and a more sustainable urban environment for residents and commuters alike.
