The Manipur government has launched a new organic fertiliser brand named “Oorja” as part of its efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers in the state. The initiative was formally introduced by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh during a fertiliser distribution programme held in Imphal for the Kharif 2026 farming season.
The launch event, organised by the Directorate of Agriculture at Sanjenthong, also saw the flag-off of fertiliser distribution trucks. Officials said the move is aimed at ensuring timely availability of inputs to farmers while encouraging a gradual shift toward organic cultivation practices across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said that around 4,000 hectares of land in Manipur have already been brought under organic farming. He added that the government plans to expand this by another 4,000 hectares in the coming years as part of its broader strategy to promote environmentally sustainable agriculture and improve soil health.

Under the new initiative, the fertiliser “Oorja” will be made available to farmers at a subsidised rate of ₹250 per bag, compared to its market price of ₹480. Officials said the pricing structure is intended to make organic inputs more accessible and encourage wider adoption among farming communities.
The Chief Minister also addressed concerns regarding fertiliser distribution in the state, noting that around 1.8 lakh bags of urea had been distributed up to September last year. While some reports of shortages had emerged earlier, he said the government currently has around 2 lakh bags in stock and maintained that there is no shortage of fertilisers at present.
To improve transparency, authorities are now distributing fertilisers based on Aadhaar verification, farmer cards, and location-specific requirements. Officials from the Agriculture Department will also monitor distribution across districts to prevent irregularities and ensure fair allocation. The Chief Minister urged farmers to report any issues to the Directorate of Agriculture so that concerns can be addressed promptly.
