Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed optimism for a “new chapter of unity, stability, and development” in Manipur under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In a post on X, Singh congratulated Shah for becoming India’s longest-serving Union Home Minister, surpassing icons like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and L.K. Advani. “This is not just a record; it reflects trust, vision, and unmatched commitment to the nation,” he stated.
Singh credited Shah’s “tireless support” for Manipur’s anti-drug campaign, which led to the destruction of 15,496 acres of poppy fields by 2023 and a 40% drop in drug-related crimes, per state police data. He highlighted Shah’s role in bringing the Manipur People’s Army to peace talks for the first time in 2024, a breakthrough after decades of resistance. Additionally, negotiations with the Zeliangrong United Front have opened “new possibilities for reconciliation,” fostering hope for lasting peace.
A key achievement, Singh noted, is Shah’s decision to fence the 1,643-km India-Myanmar border, addressing Manipur’s long-standing demand to curb cross-border militancy and smuggling. Work on the ₹14,000 crore project began in 2024, with 30 km completed by July 2025, per the Ministry of Home Affairs. The initiative includes smart fencing and surveillance to enhance security.

Singh’s remarks come amid Manipur’s ongoing recovery from ethnic violence in 2023, which displaced 60,000 people. Shah’s visits during the crisis and the deployment of 5,000 additional CRPF personnel helped stabilize the region. With Modi’s Act East Policy driving infrastructure projects like the ₹1,800 crore Imphal-Kohima highway, Singh envisions Manipur as a hub for trade and tourism by 2030.
