Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state government will continue and expand the Ladki Bahin scheme, aiming to empower women by creating one crore financially independent 'Lakhpati Didis' within the next two years. Currently, the scheme provides monthly financial assistance of ₹1,500 to eligible women living below the poverty line.
Addressing a campaign rally ahead of the December 2 local body elections, Fadnavis said half of the target would be achieved within the year, with the rest completed in the following two years. He urged voters to support Mahayuti candidates while pledging government commitment to public welfare during their five-year term.
The government has provided substantial funding for this flagship scheme, which thus far benefits over 2.5 crore women across Maharashtra. Despite promises to raise monthly assistance to ₹2,100, Fadnavis clarified the hike would be implemented after fiscal conditions improve.

Fadnavis also emphasized the importance of developing urban centers alongside rural areas, noting that Maharashtra's cities have faced challenges including sanitation, water supply, and infrastructure deficits due to past neglect. He highlighted that the central government has provided ₹50,000 crore for urban development, and the state is actively transforming city landscapes to accommodate rising populations and migration from villages.
This dual focus on rural empowerment through schemes like Ladki Bahin and urban infrastructure development underscores Maharashtra's inclusive growth strategy, seeking to balance welfare and modernization across the state.
