The Maharashtra government has rolled out a robust insurance scheme for 1.5 lakh 'Govindas' participating in the vibrant Dahi Handi festival, celebrated as part of Janmashtami on August 16. The initiative offers up to Rs 10 lakh in payouts for fatalities or severe injuries, ensuring safety for those forming human pyramids to break the iconic pot of curd, milk, and butter—a playful nod to Lord Krishna’s childhood antics.
The state will fully fund the insurance for registered Govindas, as outlined in a government resolution issued on Wednesday. The Maharashtra State Govinda Association, Mumbai, will verify participants’ training, age, and eligibility, coordinating with the commissioner of sports and youth services in Pune.
The insurance covers a range of accidents: Rs 10 lakh for death or total permanent disability (like loss of both eyes or limbs), Rs 5 lakh for partial loss (one eye, arm, or leg), and compensation for other disabilities based on standard insurance metrics. Medical expenses up to Rs 1 lakh for performance-related injuries are also included.
