The Maharashtra State Women's Commission has raised alarms over the ineffective enforcement of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, known as the POSH Act, and is advocating for mandatory POSH audits across all workplaces in the state.
In a video statement posted on X on August 6, 2025, commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar highlighted findings from her recent statewide inspections, noting that while many workplaces have established Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) as required, these often exist merely on paper, lacking functionality.
Chakankar pointed out a significant gap in awareness among ICC members regarding their roles, responsibilities, and the legal framework, leaving women employees vulnerable and unsafe. To address this, the commission has formally proposed to the Minister for Women and Child Development the issuance of a government resolution mandating regular POSH compliance audits.
“These audits should carry the same weight as financial or fire safety audits,” Chakankar emphasized, underscoring their importance in ensuring workplaces are not only legally compliant but also foster a genuinely secure environment for women. The proposal aims to strengthen accountability and enhance workplace safety for women across Maharashtra.
